Do you use a Payment App like Venmo, PayPal or Zelle to Pay your Nanny or Housekeeper?

Good article from Cnet explaining the confusion over the new IRS reporting law for payments over $600 made through payment apps like Venmo, PayPal, Zelle etc. Tax advisors recommend employers of nannies, housekeepers, companions and other domestics paying salaries through a payment app should do so through a separate business account so the payments  are clear and easier to tie into their nanny’s or housekeeper’s W-2. You should consult your own tax or legal advisor to avoid any missteps.

“Going forward, third-party payment companies will issue you a 1099-K tax form each year if you earn $600 or more annually in income for goods or services. This tax form might include taxable and nontaxable transactions, particularly if the account is for both business and personal use.

The IRS will also receive a copy of the tax form and won’t be relying purely on self-reporting. “The IRS will be able to cross-reference both our report and yours,” PayPal noted in a November 2021 press release.

To make managing your business finances easier, we recommend creating separate PayPal, Zelle, Cash App or Venmo accounts just for your professional finances.”Continue article here.

2021 Holiday Bonus Guide for Your Nanny, Babysitter or Housekeeper

Naturally, we get some version of the question below often this time of year so we wanted to offer some guidance.

“Thank you, thank you, we love Monica, and she is phenomenal with our children. As we approach the end of the year, can you please let me know the typical amount we should bonus our nanny?”

A full-time Nanny can usually expect a holiday bonus of one to two week’s compensation – two week’s pay depending upon her length of service.  If your nanny has been with you for several years, the bonus may exceed two weeks, if feasible. Additionally, if the nanny has been with the family less than a year, half of her weekly salary is standard, or one full day of pay for each month she has worked for you. If the nanny is just starting, a $100 gift card sets a nice tone.  A hand-written note of thanks expressing your appreciation and referencing a yearly highlight of the caregiver/child relationship is an additional way to show your genuine gratitude.

Some families will include an extra little something coming from the children like a homemade card, cookies or her favorite confection which surrounds the monetary gift with genuine warmth and appreciation from the child.

For the part-time regular babysitter that provides care several times each month, a gift equal to one night’s pay is the norm. Many families choose to provide a $75-$100 gift card to her favorite shop, cafe, nail salon etc.

Housekeeper/Cleaner, one or two week’s pay, depending upon her length of service and a small gift like a bottle of wine, fine chocolate or Mani-Pedi gift card.

The holiday bonus signifies your family’s appreciation for her performance and dedication to your children’s care, development, and the vital role your nanny plays with your family. A family should also include an annual review (ask us about our evaluation template) which helps nannies and families understand where change may be needed and to recognize areas where the nanny’s performance has exceeded expectations.

Obviously, this is a general guideline of industry norms in the NY metropolitan region. Some families give considerably more or less depending on overall job performance, length of employment, particular circumstances, and family budget.

Wee Care Nanny wishes you and your loved ones a wonderful and joyous holiday season!

“Prep Your Children for a Move with These 17 Tips”

Moving is an exciting life event, but it can still be stressful – for you and your kids. Your children can feel especially scared and nervous about the changes that are approaching. Whether you’re just moving down the street or moving across the country from Greenwich, CT to Los Angeles, California, OR, leaving a house can feel like a loss to your children.

To help get you started, Wee Care Nanny, along with other experts in the field, shared some of our best tips and advice with Redfin on how to prepare your kids for moving and how to make the transition easier on them. Check out what we had to say!

Stay connected with your previous nanny

Families relocating often experience a “break up” with their current nanny when their caregiver is unable to move with the family. The ideal situation occurs when the nanny can travel with the family to their new home and continue working through the transition process. If that isn’t possible, explain to your children that their nanny can remain an important part of their lives. They can exchange birthday and holiday cards, and have Facetime dates or regular Zoom calls. If both parties work together, the relationship between nannies and their charges can truly last a lifetime. It’s not unusual for us to hear from nannies that are still in touch with the “children” they cared for 5, 10, or even 20 years ago. – Wee Care Nanny Agency
