A lot of parents are asking, “When will it be possible to resume child care?” There are no easy answers, as families must factor in acceptable risk and both health and financial considerations. CTCARES for Frontline Workers Child Care Subsidy Program

According to the CT office of Early Childhood,  CT nannies, senior aides and home health care workers employed by frontline workers may qualify for the CTCARES child care subsidy program.

From the CT Office of Early Childhood-If you’re struggling to find and pay for child care during COVID-19 — and you’re a frontline worker, like a health care, child care, or grocery worker — this short-term program can help. It offers payments directly to child care providers, so your child gets the care they need and you’re able to work.

How much funding does the program offer?

The funding depends on the number of children you have who need care and the number of hours the frontline worker in your family needs to work.

If you work 21 or more hours each week:

  • For one child, $200 each week for up to 6 weeks
  • For 2 or more children, up to a maximum of $500 per family each week for up to 6 weeks

If you work 8 to 20 hours each week:

  • For one child, $100 each week for up to 6 weeks
  • For 2 or more children, up to a maximum of $250 per family each week for up to 6 weeks

OEC will pay the subsidy directly to the child care provider. You should expect to pay a co-pay as well, since child care costs are often higher than the subsidy.

Nanny Employers Excluded from COVID-19 Payroll Protection Program (PPP)

The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) included under the recently enacted CARES Act provides forgivable loans to employers to continue to pay employees during the COVID-19 crisis. The idea is to provide an incentive for employers to retain their employees during this challenging health and financial crisis.   However, the act excluded employers of nannies, housekeepers, eldercare companions or all household employers because they are not businesses.  This is inherently unfair to household employers and millions of US domestic workers as it exacerbates economic instability at a time of great financial uncertainty.  Homework Solutions, our domestic payroll partner, provided more detail here.
